The DNA of the House of Bernadotte

The House of Bernadotte is a Swedish royal dynasty of French origin that owes its name to Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who became King of Sweden in 1818 under the name Charles XIV Johan. Given the importance of the royal house, this text considers the genetic and genealogical aspects of the House of Bernadotte, including haplogroups.

The roots of the House of Bernadotte lie in the French region of Béarn. Its founding member, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, became a significant figure during the politically turbulent times of the Napoleonic Wars. He was a close associate of Napoleon before becoming king of Sweden. His ancestry can be traced back to the 17th century, to the Bernadotte family of Pau, France. His father, Jean Henri Bernadotte, was a prosecutor and his mother, Jeanne de Saint-Jean, came from a family of fishmongers.

Regarding genetic ancestry, the haplogroup plays an important role. A haplogroup is a group of alleles in an organism that share a common ancestry, due to genetic inheritance along the paternal or maternal line. In the specific case of the House of Bernadotte, genetic studies showed that members of the family belong to haplogroup R1b, which is predominant in the Western European population.

The House of Bernadotte has developed a complex family tree structure over the years. After Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte became King of Sweden, he was succeeded on the throne by his only child, Oskar I. In the following generations, the dynasty experienced several crises and at times was threatened with extinction.

The descendants of Oskar I ruled Sweden to the present day. His son Charles XV became king of Sweden and Norway, and his son, Oskar II, was the last king of both countries before the dissolution of the union in 1905. Gustav V, Oskar II's son, became the next king of Sweden.

Gustav V had three sons, of whom Gustav VI Adolf succeeded him on the throne. But his coronation was not without its difficulties, as his first wife, Princess Margaret of Connaught, had died before his coronation, and his eldest son Gustav Adolf had died in a plane crash. Despite these tragedies, the dynasty continued its reign with Carl XVI Gustaf, Gustav Adolf's son.

Today, the House of Bernadotte is represented by King Carl XVI Gustaf, who came to power in 1973. Genetic studies suggest that he still belongs to haplogroup R1b, which underscores his connection to the founders of the House of Bernadotte. His daughter is Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, who is the first female heir to the throne in Swedish history and is expected to represent the Royal House of Bernadotte in the future.

In summary, the House of Bernadotte is a prestigious royal dynasty that, thanks to strategic marriages and inheritances, has been able to maintain its power despite numerous crises and challenges. Today it is an important institution in Sweden, both historically and culturally. In the process, the genetic and genealogical research opens up exciting insights into the origins and history of this dynasty.

House Bernadotte belongs in the paternal line to the haplogroup R-M343.
